How to Use the Packing Calculator

Using the calculator takes less than 10 seconds. Here's what each bit means.

Step 1: Select your bedrooms.

Choose the number of bedrooms in your home, from Studio up to 6+. This is the single biggest indicator of how much "stuff" a home holds, more bedrooms generally means more furniture, more storage, and more boxes to fill.

Step 2: Select your household size.

Pick the number of people aged 4 and over living in your home, from 1 to 7. We don't count the under-4s. More people in the house means more clothes, more kitchen gear, more everything.

Step 3: Get your box breakdown.

As soon as you've made both selections, the calculator instantly generates a recommended box list broken down by size (small, medium, large, and extra-large) along with a total box count for your move. Use it to order the right boxes the first time, rather than running short halfway through packing the kitchen or ending up with a garage full of unused cartons.

The calculator works off averages. If you're a minimalist, you can probably trim the numbers down a touch. If you're more of a collector (we won't say hoarder) or you've lived in your home for a long time, round up — you'll likely have more tucked away than the average household. Either way, the calculator gives you a solid, starting point so you're not packing blind.

Order Moving Boxes: Sizes of Packing Boxes

Even a difference of an inch or two makes a HUGE difference when you want your items packed and moved safely. To know how many boxes you'll need, it helps to know the sizes they come in.

Generally, there are four sizes:

• Small (1.5 cubic feet)- books, tools, tinned food, anything dense and heavy.
• Medium (1.5–3 cubic feet)- the all-rounder. Kitchenware, toys, smaller appliances.
• Large (2.5–3.5 cubic feet)- bedding, towels, lampshades, lightweight bulky items.
• Extra Large (3.6+ cubic feet)- pillows, cushions, soft furnishings. Keep these light — a full extra-large box of books is a back injury waiting to happen.

Then there are specialty boxes built for the trickier stuff, books, dishes, and wardrobe boxes with built-in hanging rods so your clothes travel exactly as they left the closet.
